“Driven by the forces of love, the fragments of the world seek each other so that the world may come to being.” ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

We all know what love is, right?  After all, I suspect that most of us have felt the emotion of love, have “fallen in love”, listened to “love songs”, watched movies about people “in love” and the like. And, everything we think we know about love is true…..but love is also so much more.

Here I want you to consider that what we feel as the emotion of love is actually a divine force imbedded in us that pushes and pulls us to connect with that which appears to be “outside us”.  In that light, we can see that love is a force that moves us along our spiritual evolutionary path.

Earlier, we stated that we are all on a journey where we forgot that we are all One, that we are all connected.  We wander around in this state of separation, making choices via our free will that serve us and ones that don’t. We may traverse this path of isolation for a long time, yet our ultimate path is always taking back to remember our unity.

From the beginning, the Divine (or God or “the All” or “Spirit”) created us while also imbuing us with certain spiritual qualities.  One of those qualities is the ability to “feel love”. Love can serve to kick start us along our path to remembering our Truth.

What happens when we “feel love”?  We have an emotional pull to connect with something or someone who we perceive as being “out there” separate and apart from us.  This emotional tug motivates us to take actions to begin letting go of being alone in the world and to share our existence with another.  What happens is that one aspect of the seeming multiplicity of the One seeks to be in a close and intimate connection with another aspect of the One.  God is connecting with God in the state of loving Itself.

And when we begin to feel the bonds of connection with one who appears to be separate from us, somewhere in our consciousness we begin seeking a little bit more the feeling of unity. In time and through our experiences, we begin to expand our circle of who we love.  As our circle of love grows outward to encompass more and more (our family, our friends, our community, our country, our world and beyond), we are moving to greater and greater levels of knowing our Source.

Not everyone will reach these greatest levels of awareness in this lifetime.  After all, we all do have free will and can choose to follow this path of heart or not.  Many may only taste smaller circles of love, if any love at all.

At the core of these circles is each of us as our individual expressions.  If life’s lessons have caused us to not see ourselves as worthy of giving or receiving love…..if that inner most circle of our individual self cannot feel love for itself, then one most likely won’t be able to evolve outward to connect in love with another.  Hence, in a positive and non-narcissist way, we must “feel love” for ourselves so as to give love to another.

Later, we will look at the topic of love again and how in our humanness we sometimes seek to limit it.  However, for now, I simply want you to begin to see how it serves our movement towards becoming “enlightened”; in knowing our interconnectedness.

Let us close here with another quote from Teilhard de Chardin, “Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”
