Seems like everywhere I look, people are expressing their opinions very strongly! The path of their life has helped them forge their beliefs on which they hang their opinions.

Yet sometimes, I wonder if people truly understand the underlying causes of their strongly held argument. Do they really know what their basic intention is?

What do I mean by their basic intention? By that, I mean do they see everything as interconnected and all “one” or everything as separate and apart?

Recently I wrote about the fact that there are two kinds of people – those who see everything as interconnected or part of a oneness – and those that see everything as separate and apart. Although I like to write and talk about Spiral Dynamics and Integral Theory, both of which outline a series of worldviews through which humanity evolves, it seems to me that most of our differences can be boiled down to these two groups of people.

In a way, Spiral Dynamics does acknowledge these two groups of people – as the “spiral” swings back and forth between a focus upon individuality and a focus on the collective. But beyond this focus, Spiral Dynamics speaks to a higher level of consciousness, where we start to sense and know that everything is connected. Yet I believe that people at all levels of consciousness have within them a sense of this oneness. Consider that all of the major religions have some form of the Golden Rule as a basic tenet – which has been around a long time!

OK – Think about this – and yes I know you can accuse me of oversimplifying here – but when we look at the arguments for and against the recent healthcare bill, and a lot of reasons have been put forth both for and against it, at the heart of every argument is a basic feeling that either collective care and concern for all is more important or an individual person/company/country is more important. If we believe that we are all connected, then we would want everyone to have access to affordable quality healthcare without any strings attached.

Recently a disturbing trend has come to my attention – there is a rise around the world in human slavery. When I first heard this, I thought how could this be in this day and age? Recently, I saw one of those Ted talks by an individual who was reporting on this phenomena. Then in the past few days, I received a blog I read routinely calling its readers to action – to do something about this disturbing trend in human slavery. How could there be slavery in the the 21st century? If we all saw ourselves as all “one”, then there wouldn’t be.

This past weekend, I went to my first “protest” rally in decades. Mary and I marched down the streets of Denver to the capital building where about 150 of us gathered on the steps to protest against the expanded use GMO food. Now at first blush, it would seem that the use of GMO food could be construed as being for the collective. After all the companies that have promoted GMO food say that its expansion will allow us to feed more and more people around the world. But the facts don’t bear that out. Here’s a website if you want more details on that.

For me – although I’m not in favor of GMO food – an even bigger issue is why any corporation would push back against the labeling of such food? There have even been companies fighting against the labeling of any food as “GMO free”. Why? If we are all “one”, when would we not want all of us to have access to that knowledge? If we see ourselves as separate and apart from one another, then I want my company to succeed and have greater profits even if it means a loss of freedom for you.

So here’s an assignment for all of us – as we look at people disagreeing on an issue – push behind their arguments to see if they can be divided into these basic intentions. Does one argument serve to continue a sense of separation and divisiveness? Does one of the arguments tend to support seeing the unity among all people? Which position are you going to be favoring?

Something to think about…

Have you created your New Year’s resolutions yet?  If not, here are some questions to get you started.  And, if you have already created some intentions, then maybe these questions will help fine tune them.

I’m compelled to remind us all that we don’t have to wait for New Year’s to create intentions or resolutions.  We can (and do) set intentions every day.  And if we slip up, we don’t have to wait till next January to start over.  This point was the subject of my article last summer entitled “Reinventing Resolutions“.  Keeping that in mind, let’s get to the questions…

For what in your life in 2010 do you feel gratitude?

It’s really easy to focus our attention on the areas of our life where we feel lack.  The gap between what we want and what we have seems to scream for our attention.  The irony, of course, is that the more we focus on that gap, the more we grow that lack.  It’s okay to notice the contrast between our desires and our current manifestation of them as that contrast focuses our attention on what we want.  But we must keep our eyes on the prize and not the lack of it.  To assist us in focusing on the positive, we must see it where it already exists in our life.  So looking back over this last year, where were you given gifts for which you are thankful?  Keep that gratitude in the forefront of your mind as you set your 2011 intentions.

What aspect of your life in 2010 do you need to release in 2011?

We all carry baggage of the past around with us.  In some cases, this baggage has been with us for so long that we can’t imagine living without it.  This baggage is old beliefs and behaviors that hold us back from living the highest possible life that we can.  Take a moment and review all areas of your life – relationships, career, income, spirituality, health, diet and so on – and as you do so, identify those areas of contrast mentioned above where there is a gap between your desires and your manifestation.  For any gap that you notice, ask yourself – what behavioral pattern or belief do I need to release in this area of my life?  Once you’ve identified what needs to be let go of, take steps to allow that old mold of thinking and behavior to be replaced with new thoughts and actions.  Letting go of the old creates the space for the growth of the new.

Note – if you are struggling with the release of the old, then you may still have a lot of emotional energy attached to it.  One of the best ways I have discovered for releasing this emotional energy is a simple technique taught by Tom Stone called the “SEE technique”.  Visit this link for more information.

What new do you desire to see in your life in 2011?

Imagine in your mind’s eye that it’s the end of 2011 and you’re looking back on the year with gratitude for all the new and wonderful things that have shown up.  What would those new manifestations be?  Again, take a moment and review all the areas of your life mentioned previously.  What is being called forth?  This is where I find integral theory to be useful – it helps to categorize the areas of your life for consideration as to where growth would be most beneficial.  You might consider reviewing this previous 3-part summary so as to ensure you are considering all potential areas for development.

My wife, Mary, has been playing with the following question that came from one of her spiritual teachers which gets at the same concept–”If you knew now what you will know at the end of 2011 how would your life change?” (Question from Hossca Harrison, visit this link for more of his writings.)  She likes this question because it gets her to an intention as to what she wants to learn in the experiences of the new year – and Mary says– if you can get to that learning in your mind now, then why wait to implement the learning?  Put your new knowledge and wisdom into place now!

After you’ve identified the “new” that you wish to grow in 2011, sit down and write a positive affirmation from the standpoint that the new has already shown up in your life.  Create a list of affirmations which you review daily.

Here’s some examples to get you started – you want to lose weight?  Say:  I know that my body is healthy and physically fit now.  Every day I eat the right foods and get the right exercise.  You want more friends?  Say:  I know that I am a friend to everyone I meet.  My life is filled with deep and meaningful relationships.  You want more money?  Say:  Prosperity and abundance are mine now.  I am open to both giving and receiving money as it flows through my life in perfect circulation.  Want to meditate more?  Say:  Every day I am in tune with spirit.  I arise each day and sit in joyous communion with that divinity within me.…and so on.

And, the key is not only to say them – it is to live your life as if they were already true.  Create the intentions and follow them with the actions!

Finally – what is it that is calling you to even bother making resolutions?

What is it you’re trying to “resolve”?  Is there a problem you’re trying to settle?  Are you trying to “re-solve” something – like a puzzle you once had the answer to but now you must solve it again?  Why that feeling within you that calls you to filling that gap between desire and current manifestation?  What is it that is forcing you to grow?

Although I would love for each of you to ponder these questions for yourself, I’ll give you what I think.  Briefly – the consciousness within you was born of the oneness of spirit.  That consciousness is in each of us.  We believe we are separate individuals living our own lives with their own desires and needs, but we really are all one.  That desire within us that calls us to express our lives at higher and higher levels is an urge that was embedded in us from the beginning.  Our desire to grow in any aspect of our life is a force that is calling us to both experience the vast fullness of this life and to return us in our awareness to knowing that we are all one.  Our resolutions move us on that path.  We are “resolving” the discrepancy between our sense of separation and our sense of unity.  We are “re-solving” the puzzle where we once knew we were one and are having to come to that awareness again.

So…set your resolutions today and everyday!  May we all have a blessed and joyous 2011 living in oneness!

World Cup Unites UsI used to think soccer was pretty boring but I’ve changed my mind.  In fact, watching the World Cup over the past few weeks has made me realize that not only can soccer be exciting, it can serve as a uniting force and a common language in moving humanity towards a sense of oneness.

Yes, I know some of you reading this will argue that soccer is not as exciting as American football.  And I know that others will point at instances of violent rioting after soccer matches as evidence that the sport is not a unifying force.  I’ve held those point of views previously myself.

I grew up on American football and baseball.  What makes them exciting to me is my appreciation for the nuances of the game.  My personal understanding and history with the sports enhances the sense of excitement I gain from viewing them.  Yet let’s be honest, without this inner appreciation for the sport itself, especially baseball, I doubt we would call it exciting.  So it’s what we bring to the sport that makes it special to us.

My wife and I just got back from a vacation in Europe.  What struck me was the excitement that each country was exhibiting regarding the World Cup.  There was great interest in watching all the games no matter who was playing.  We visited restaurants, bars and pubs from Germany to France to England and in Ireland.  In each place I could talk with locals about World Cup games that we had both watched and share our thoughts about our experience.  It was like discussing American football or baseball with fellow Americans only the discussion and sport transcended national boundaries.

The emotion that sport generates can transcend our differences and bind us together.  This was the point of last year’s movie “Invictus” which detailed how Nelson Mandela used rugby and the quest for a world championship for South Africa as a unifying force to break down apartheid.

Yes, soccer’s World Cup does pit one country versus another on the field and its passionate fans do sometimes exhibit behavior that is not in our best interest.  Yet the raising of interest around the planet towards the winner of the tournament serves a greater purpose — it gives a focal point towards which all eyes on the planet can gaze.  The drama created by the sport offers a storyline that we can share with others globally.  Ultimately it can bind us together.

America has slowly been expanding its interest in the games.  The success of the USA team this year has helped in raising our interest further.  Although it’s unfortunate that the USA lost over the weekend and won’t be advancing to the next round, that doesn’t mean our attention should wane.  Just like all other global citizens in countries around the world, we can realize that it’s not so much about whether “our country” wins or loses, it’s really about what we bring to the sport that can make it special for us.  Our paying attention and rooting for other countries taps us into the global drama that is currently unfolding and connects us with others around the planet.

Pick a team and root for them — ultimately all of us win.  Who are you pulling for?

You and I are like different petals on the same flower....

Mystics tell us everything is connected. Quantum physics points to the same truth. The scientific theory of human values called “Spiral Dynamics” says that at the higher levels of awareness we come to the same belief. Chaos theory and systems theory are built around an assumption that everything is interrelated and looks at the interaction between these interrelated parts. Where ever you look, more and more people are coming to the conclusion that everything is connected.

Consider for a moment that every person, object, situation, thought… everything that is, all that you can sense in the world and all that is beyond your senses… is connected… stop and look around you… what are the implications of this awareness as you go about your day? What are the implications on how you interact with others? What are the implications on your specific political beliefs?

If you have come to the conclusion that everything is part of a One, then I ask you — what are you going to do with that knowledge? What are you doing?

I’m not here to tell you that you need to do anything specific because you have come to this realization. Although we may all be connected, we are still unique and individual expressions within that oneness. How we are called to express our awareness of our interrelationship to one another will vary from person to person.

Some of us may simply keep this awareness in the backs of our minds as we interact with others. We may simply bring compassion to all our relationships. Some of us may feel a call to be of service to assist those around us who are in need. Some of us may feel a need to be a force for positive change for the planet. The way in which we put our knowledge into motion can very in both our specific tactics and in our degree of scope. How are you using your awareness of our oneness?

I keep asking the question repeatedly here to get you to think about it… to really think about it. Let’s take it to even more specific situations…

If we are all connected and everything is one, then:

  • How does that change your reaction to a homeless person on the street asking for money?
  • How does that change your reaction to someone who cuts you off on the freeway?
  • How does that change your reaction when someone wants you to pass along an e-mail blasting one person, one religion, one political party, or one country over another?
  • How does that change your reaction to the health care legislation?
  • How does that change your reaction to whether or not you support the United Nations?
  • How does that change your reaction to your spouse when they do something that upsets you?
  • How does that change your reaction to those with different religious beliefs from you?
  • How does that change your reaction to those who have different political beliefs from you?

I think you get the picture… if we are all connected… if we are truly all connected and part of a oneness, what are you doing and what are you going to do with that knowledge?

Love Binds All

Love Binds All

Let’s get ready for Valentine’s Day by talking love today. Imagine for a moment how love shows up in your life. Bring into your awareness a situation when you feel the emotion of love come forth from within. Got it? Most of us probably picture a person whom we love…or a pet…or perhaps, an overwhelming moment in nature. Whatever it is, notice that most likely there is something external which draws you towards it.

Recently we discussed how love is an evolutionary force whose power works to draw us out from the sense of being separate and apart from the rest of life (see “What is Love, Why is Love“) and to move us into a sense of unity, returning us back to that Oneness from which we came. So that feeling of love you imagined is an evolutionary force that’s embedded in everything.

Everything? We know what it’s like to feel this love force as a human being. And, we often project how animals feel this love force. I know my dog Harmony loves me and I imagine that what she feels for me is the same emotional sense that I feel for her. Many people, such as my wife Mary, can sense the love force coming forth from plants. But what about other things? Do rocks sense love? Do other inanimate objects have the ability to sense the love force?

So here’s an experiment I would like you to try today. I want you to shift in your awareness what you consider love. Instead of simply being that emotion you feel, for today consider it both that emotion and any force that draws two or more things together and binds them.

So as we look around, everything we see is made up of atoms which are subatomic particles bound together… and then molecules which are atoms bound together… and then cells which are molecules bound together… and then organisms which are cells bound together… and on up the chain to more and more complex organisms such as humans whose bodies are the binding together of organs, tissue, fluids, and more all working together. Philosopher Ken Wilber refers to each of the levels in this chain as a holon… something that is whole and complete within itself but made up of smaller parts that are whole and complete within themselves… and is also a part of a greater whole something above it. Hence, humans are holons… we are whole and complete within ourselves… we are made up of smaller parts that are whole and complete within themselves… and above us we help make up some greater holon. The force that binds these holons together is the love force.

So in your experiment, I’d like you consider that the force you sense that holds things together is the force of love. Love is holding together your computer, your desk, yourself. But let’s also look for those other situations when two or more things are drawn together.

In the morning when I sit down with my coffee, Harmony comes up and nuzzles me and licks me. That’s the love force. When Mary comes home from work, I greet her with a hug and a kiss. That’s the love force. When my heart is open when I’m holding one of my grandchildren, that’s the love force too. When I’m in nature and feel the sense of connectedness, it’s love binding me to the world out there.

These may seem obvious… but throughout our day we experience things binding together and don’t even realize it. Whenever we learn and make a connection in our awareness, that binding together of multiple concepts and ideas allows us to see with greater clarity how things are interconnected. These can be those great a-ha moments that open us to great wisdom about life or they can be those more mundane moments as we discover how to navigate through physical life. Whether you realize it or not, learning how to use your new cell phone or how to wire a ceiling fan both serve to connect you and bind you to a greater whole. It is the love force at work connecting you. The more we look for love, the more love we see.

All of this love is serving to bind us to each other and to everything. All of this love is serving for us to know and to experience Oneness. The ultimate holon is Spirit containing all of the smaller holons bound in love.

Teilhard de Chardin put it this way, in his book The Phenomenon of Man: “Cosmic energy is love, the affinity of being with being. It is a universal property of all life, and embraces all forms of organized matter. Thus, the tendency to unite; the attraction of atom to atom, molecule to molecule, or cell to cell. The forces of love, drive the fragments of the universe to seek each other so that the world may come into being.”

So let’s get ready for Valentine’s Day by seeing love everywhere we look.

Blessings.
