A mass email I received today from Marianne Williamson made me think of my first book. Back in 2012, I published Be Yourself – Evolving the World Through Personal Empowerment. If you ever publish a book, you develop a quick “elevator speech” to answer people when they ask what the book is about.

Here is how I answered….the book is about: (1) how we are at a choice point in the world as evidenced by all of the current planetary challenges; (2) we can choose to continue down a path of more and more difficulty or we can choose to go a higher, more loving path; and that there were (3) 3 keys that I offered to guide us towards the higher path—focusing more on how we are alike than how we are different, focusing on a common vision for the future and to “be yourself”….by which I meant finding out what your purpose was in life and then living it.

The first half of the book is theory, the second half is a series of exercises designed to help you identify your calling and to help you implement it into your life. My belief, which I still hold, is that if we are each able to have our basic needs met and move to the higher level needs (using Maslow’s hierarchy)….to self actualization and transcendence….that at these higher levels, our implementing our sense of personal purpose in our lives would call us to be of service to others. Then if we were each in service to the whole, then we would create a planet that truly works well for everyone….and ultimately move us to that positive path choice.

So why did Marianne’s email make me think of my book from 7 years ago? Here is what she wrote:

“The United States, along with the rest of the world, is standing at a fork in the road. One direction leads to a continuation of the track we are on, and the other to a new beginning.

The track we are on is based on a perception of ourselves, each other, and our relationship to the earth that is spiritually inaccurate – viewing us as separate when in fact we are one, thinking what we do to others will not come back to us, and that nature will abide forever our lack of reverence and care. It will not. From nuclear bombs to environmental destruction, from economic inequality to systemic injustice, the ways of the old are unsurvivable in the long term; they are going to fall away and make room for new creation.

Our only choice, here at the fork in the road, is whether to endure in time the catastrophic consequences of our continued attachment to an obsolete worldview, or participate fully in the birth of a new evolutionary impulse.

So much of our economy, so much of our sense of security, is based on limiting and destroying things – from the glories of nature to even people’s lives. We need an economy, and a sense of security, that is based on creating the good and the beautiful – from human potential to righteous relationships. Our politics should not be chugging along like an old outdated train; it should be a container for the supersonic energies of a more enlightened worldview.

We’re talking about the survival of our planet, the survival of our democracy, and the survival of the human race here. Old thinking has no place in conscious living now, personally or collectively. It is time for a New Enlightenment. All of life is calling out to us: “Choose another way. Choose another way..” “

It’s fascinating to see Williamson sending me an email in early 2019 as part of her 2020 presidential campaign that essentially makes the same points as my book from 2012. Yes, we are at a “fork in the road”. Yes, the underlying issue is our needing to let go of seeing ourselves as separate and instead know that we are one. Yes, we need to choose a different path that builds a world that creates the good and the beautiful…..and one that taps our inherent human potential….our spiritual calling to be all that we can be.

As I wrote in Be Yourself, “Remember that you were placed on Earth not to play it small, but to live large. You are here to answer your personal call, to empower yourself to be the person you were meant to be. As you answer the call to personal empowerment, you will become ever more aware that everyone is related and all future generations are our descendents. They are calling you, and they are calling me. Let’s answer their call with love.”
