Which is more important….having your political party in power so that you can force through your ideological agenda…..or maintaining the integrity of our American political system and way of life?
So far, most Republicans….not all, but most….are so drunk on the potential of moving through a conservative agenda (or what passes for one these days) into law that they first held their noses and supported Trump during the campaign (in spite of his mean spirited campaign rallies, his Access Hollywood tape, and more) and are now looking the other way on offenses so egregious that it threatens to turn our country into some kind of autocratic banana republic.
Any Republican who cares about this country the least bit should want the investigation of Russian tampering with our election to find the truth no matter what it may be. Any Americans who were involved should be held accountable. Trump’s obviously vindictive firing of FBI Director James Comey who was overseeing such investigation…. using some utterly bogus excuse as his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation is friggin’ scary.
By now, everyone knows the details of this. Reports indicated Comey was asking for more resources for the investigation. Trump wanted it to go away. Trump wanted Comey to pledge loyalty to him, Comey’s loyalty was to the law and upholding it. Comey refused to confirm Trump’s imaginary statements that Obama had ordered his phones tapped. Comey refused to give Trump a preview of his testimony to the Senate.
No matter what is “true” here, there is enough smoke to be concerned that there may be fire. There’s a saying that “perception is reality”….meaning that what we perceive something to be is what it is for us….there is no doubt here that for most Americans, the perception is that Trump fired Comey because of the Russian investigation. Republicans should let that soak in.
It’s time for Republicans to do the right thing, to stop supporting Trump no matter what he says or does….and to push for a complete and thorough and unbiased investigation into alleged members of the Trump administration’s interactions with Russia and their tampering with our elections.
So far, Trump has fired three people that were investigating he or his associates. This is a pattern that cannot be ignored, as stated clearly here by Elizabeth Warren.
Republicans need to tell Trump that the rule of law is more important than any political agenda.
In the past few days, the tone of the progressive groups and media has appropriately taken on a more combative tone. I am being asked to sign petitions calling for impeachment. I am seeing articles about impeachment. Articles are appearing about firing Trump and how it could be possible. Given that we are only a little over 100 days into Trump’s Presidency, Republicans should be concerned about this.
The feeling that I am perceiving from more and more Americans is fear. Even those who were willing to give Trump a chance to be “our President” are losing any hope that this can actually occur. A desperate need to take protective action is setting in.
Republicans need to do some deep soul searching of their continued support of Trump and ask themselves (again) which is more important….having your political party in power so that you can force through your ideological agenda…..or maintaining the integrity of our American political system and way of life?
Republicans need to fire Trump before the majority of Americans fire all the Republicans.
Our country and our future depends on it.
