After the election, many progressives became despondent.  Many thought, is our country taking a step backwards?

Donald Trump became our new President on Friday.  Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people (men and women) took to the streets in cities all across America as part of the “Women’s March” in support of women’s rights, inclusion and respect and dignity for all.  The march, of course, was a reaction to Trump and what he appears to stand for.  These are certainly interesting times.  So what is good about all of this?  What is good about Trump becoming President?

Some context….OK, last time I wrote about the power of reframing any situation which is causing you difficulty by simply contemplating the question “What’s Good About It? The key point is that what we give our mental energy to is what we grow in our lives. If we focus on how bad things are, we get more “bad things”. And, of course, vice versa on good things.

So if you are a Trump supporter, you are probably seeing a lot of good and find the question somewhat unneeded.  After all, the Republicans control both the House, the Senate and the Presidency.   They can push through their agenda on most things.  So to you this blog may be unnecessary.

However, if you are a progressive, then you have concerns about Trump and Republican control…..you want to see a country that works for all people, not just the wealthy….you want to see a country that is inclusive and cares about the rights and needs of everyone….you want to see a country that tackles head on the defining issue of climate change….that maintains the commons for the use for all people….that does not want to see a Supreme Court majority that will continue to support the needs of corporations over the people nor roll back rights given to women or gays….but you are probably having a hard time seeing the good….

So what is good about Trump’s Presidency if you are a progressive?  Here is the main “good” that I think you should focus upon:

Trump’s narcissistic displays, his seemingly poor ethics and non-inclusive moral displays have stirred a sleeping giant of the formerly “uninvolved progressives”.   These folks are getting off their butts, their computers and their sense of complacency that things will work out and are getting involved. They are taking to the streets to have their voices heard.  They are standing up for themselves…but also for others.  Memberships in progressive organizations have exploded.  The hundreds of thousands who got out in the streets all around the country yesterday to protest Trump’s Presidency is a good thing.  These voices, these beliefs are far greater in number than the ones in support of Trump.  Keep in mind that Clinton won the popular vote across the country by over 3 million people.

I want to stress one more point here…..as I mentioned last time, “what we resist, persists”…..in other words, are you directing the power of your consciousness “against Trump” or “for policies and a country that values everyone”?  There is a subtle difference here I want you to consider.  I understand the emotional reaction that Trump elicits in many of us….a reaction that wants to “fight” back “against Trump”…..but I am encouraging you to release the need to spend your energy being against Trump and instead see that your efforts the efforts of your fellow citizens are more about “waking up, rising up and making this country work for everyone”.  Visualize the world that you are creating through your efforts.

BOTTOM LINE:

Focus on the good that is happening with the numbers of progressives waking up and taking action for the good of all.

Focus personally not on being “against Trump” but rather “for an America that works for creating a world that works for all.”

Finally, stay involved!  Join a group that resonates with you and your goals.  Contact your representatives on issues that are important to you.  Take to the streets when necessary to call attention to your issue.  We can create that world!
