OK, no jokes.

I’m sure we can all come up with a top 10 list of things that were disappointing about this past year….but let’s set that aside.

They say that what we tend to focus on is what we tend to produce in our lives.  On the other hand, “what we resists, persists”.  Therefore, if we want to produce more happiness, joy, goodness, etc. in our lives, then we should spend more time seeing and noticing the things that make us happy…that bring us joy and goodness.

There are a few ways that my wife and I do this throughout the year.   One way is to ask each other “what was the best part of your day?”  or “what today brought you joy and happiness?”.  The point is to create a question that asks you to consider how this particular day you saw something that swung in the direction of what you want to experience.

Another way is to spend some time at the end of the year reflecting upon the things this past year that brought us joy.  My wife has gotten into the habit of writing them down when she feels the appreciation for something….she puts it on a slip of paper and drops it in a large jar.  At the end of the year, we pull out the slips to review them….and they generally jog our memories into similar good experiences.  You don’t need to do this to reflect back on this past year.  Sit down with someone and have a conversation asking “what was good for you about this past year?”

So what was good about this year for me?  There are so many things that were good.  Here is a brief sample:

I love my life with my wife, Mary.  Every day with her is a joy.

I love my 14 year old chocolate lab, Harmony.  I am filled with joy that she continues to get around and is in generally good health.

I love that my grandchildren are growing up happy and full of love.

I love my relationship with all my grown children.

I love that the readership of the Conscious Bridge website grew so much this past year.

I love that people expressed so much creativity and love in making the world a better place.

What?  You having some problems with that last one?

Well, let’s take a moment and review a few examples of the “world gone right”:

This website contains links to a multitude of good news stories from 2016.  Check it out….there are a lot of them!

The group “Global Citizen” just sent me an email with their top stories of the past year….here are links to some of the most positive among them…..John Oliver buys $15 million of medical debt for $60,000 and forgives it all, because he could……Adidas Shoes Made From Ocean Plastic Are Finally HereInstead of buying a yacht, this person is sending an entire kindergarten class to college…13 Amazing Coming of Age Traditions From Around the World.

OK, one more….the folks at Yes! magazine have produced this article entitled “It Wasn’t All Bad: 5 Signs of Positive Change in 2016“.

Now “tag” it’s your turn…..sit down upon the completion of this year and look back over and ask yourself “what was good about this year?”  I think you will amaze yourself by what you discover.

Happy new year!

Ok, the photo included in this article is from one of those good moments this year….my large family spent a week in Jamaica for Thanksgiving and most of us spent the better part of the day at the Jamaican bobsled/rainforest near Ocho Rios.  Photo used without any permission whatsoever.
