Did you enjoy “springing forward”?
Like most folks, you probably struggled with changing clocks around the house, moving the time forward on that clock in the car (or not), was late for something…..or at a minimum, when you realized that we had changed the time and “lost an hour” you had a very minor “oh shoot” moment.
Does anyone enjoy going on or off of daylight saving time? (I have never spoken to anyone who does.)
So why don’t we end it? Why do we simply accept it as one of those things that rolls around each year on the calendar (like certain holidays, awards ceremonies, beauty pageants, sporting events, etc) and just “are a part of our life” whether they benefit us or not?
Sometimes my cynical side says there must be someone out there who is getting a weird sense of pleasure by exhibiting this control over us and inflicting this unnecessary psychological disruption to our lives…..I hope not, but I struggle understanding why we seem to keep this outdated system….
Are there good reasons for keeping it? This Wikipedia page outlines the history and politics around this cultural habit. You car peruse it and see if you see a good reason for maintaining it. I don’t.
Last year, John Oliver did this great video on the issue asking “why is this still a thing?”:
Now many of you may be thinking, “with all the issues going on the world and the US, why focus on this small thing?” Well, to a degree, you would be right…..but I ask you this….is this not an easy issue on which we might be able to get some bipartisan support? I hope so. Maybe it would be a good practice bringing our politicians together.
(Unless there is some “moneyed interest” out there who benefits financially from DST that I am not aware of…if there is, then, well……there may be bipartisan opposition to getting rid of it?)
If there is no good reason to keep it…and it is something that we do not care for…..and it messes with our sleep two times a year….and it has us all “waste time” talking about the change and resetting our clocks….they maybe we have evolved beyond the need to keep it?
We don’t have to keep things that do not serve us simply out of tradition! We can change and evolve to a better way!
If you want to take action to end Daylight Saving Time, then here is a website with more information.
C’mon all you conservatives, progressives/liberals…..let’s get together and end this affront to our psychological health.
Here’s a site to use to contact your congresspeople. Use it today on this issue or another one….in fact, I encourage you to bookmark this page and continuously let your voice be heard on this issue and all of the others that impact our future.
